I have a feeling I’m not going to like “Watchmen”
I’ve heard Watchmen is pretty good, but recently I’ve found that big-budget hollywood movies don’t really do it for me, even ones that are admired by the critics / academy / etc. Also, awesome visuals / special effects don’t do it for me anymore.
Here are three visually stunning and critically acclaimed films of the 21st century which I found mostly lame and boring:
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
- Children of Men
- Pan’s Labyrinth
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, that the art and technology of filmmaking has come so far in the last 20 or so years… but that will never change the fact that you need awesome characters, actors, dialog, and stories for it to really grab me.
As for comic/superhero films, I thought The Dark Knight was pretty good but it didn’t blow me away, and in fact (I always get shit about this) I thought Batman Begins was better. Batman Begins was awesome.
I hated hated hated the Spiderman movies, and I’m not talking about the third one (which everyone agrees sucked, and which I didn’t see) but the first & second were just so flat and bland I could barely stomach them.
All the X-Men movies were pretty good, I guess, and I’m hopeful about Wolverine.
Anyway, I’ll report back after I’ve seen Watchmen, but that may be a week or more away.
